PRVE-0474 : Berkeley Packet Filter devices do not exist under
Met error PRVE-0474 when I performed a pre-installation check of grid infrastructure on both AIX nodes.
$ cd $ORACLE_HOME
$ ./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n primary01,primary02 -verbose
...
Verifying Berkeley Packet Filter devices /dev/bpf* existence and validation
check ...FAILED
primary01: PRVE-0474 : Berkeley Packet Filter devices do not exist under
directory /dev on nodes "primary01".
primary02: PRVE-0474 : Berkeley Packet Filter devices do not exist under
directory /dev on nodes "primary02".
Now what is Berkeley Packet Filter? The Berkeley Packet Filter (BPF) is a technology mostly used in analyzing network traffic, especially intrusion detection.
Let's check the actual files.
# ls -l /dev/bpf*
ls: 0653-341 The file /dev/bpf* does not exist.
Oh, there's none.
The solution is simple. Just dump traffic on network by tcpdump to initiate necessary filter devices.
# tcpdump -D
1.en0
2.en1
3.en2
4.lo0 [Loopback]
Then we check the filters again.
# ls -l /dev/bpf*
...
cr-------- 1 root system 12, 0 Mar 24 15:20 /dev/bpf0
cr-------- 1 root system 12, 1 Mar 24 15:20 /dev/bpf1
...
You can perform the pre-installation check again.
